Bendigo Bank Community Bank® network

Students on Boards program

In partnership with Deakin University, the Bendigo Bank Community Bank® network developed a unique program designed to substantially enhance the employability of university graduates and diversify Community Bank boards with access to younger Directors. Community Bank understand that graduates today face increased competition for jobs in a market that demands a high level of experience and employability. Any graduate that has the opportunity to gain critical skills that helps them stand out against their peers has a distinct advantage when they enter the job market.

The opportunity to become Non-Executive Directors of Community Banks® involved:

  • Help build, support and govern a successful local business
  • Actively engage with the business’ local community
  • Enthusiastically contribute at monthly board meetings, become a member of one of the board committees, and attend functions in line with the strategic direction of the business
  • Perform all fiduciary duties required of a non-executive director of a limited liability, public company

Daniel Nguyen talks about his experience as a Non-Executive Director:

As a student, the professional experience of being a Director for the Community Bank® was an invaluable opportunity for me to apply the knowledge from my commerce degree at Deakin and to contribute to the benefit of the local community.

The highlight of the role was to have a senior member from the Board of Directors as my mentor. As a sub-committee member of the Corporate Governance and HR Committee, I was mentored to review the Community Bank policies and to identify any potential threats to the business. The experience at the sub-committee is not only highly relevant to my professional interest of risk management, but also extended my reputation in my professional network. From this amazing learning experience, I was nominated to be on the Review Panel for the Department of Accounting and Economics at Deakin University. I have also received the invitation to design strategic directions for various professional bodies such as Committee for Melbourne and BMW.

As part of my role, I was required to attend monthly board meetings and vote on decisions from reviewing dividend policies to the approval of the annual report. My opinion at these meetings was valued and carefully considered prior to any decision being made.

I attended various community events in order to engage the local groups and societies with the Community Bank. To extend our brand promotion to the community, I also actively promoted the Community Bank via multimedia channels including SBS radio, social events at the City of Whitehorse and connecting with the Vietnamese Business Association in Australia. As a result, our Community Bank received the Next Generation Award and the Branch of the Year Award from the 2018 Central Regions Awards Night.

As an international student, DeakinTALENT has played a prominent role in helping me obtain this Directorship position from the Community Bank. From the application stage, the team has carefully reviewed my application and provided constructive feedback in order to improve the quality of my application. DeakinTALENT organised a group assessment centre, which was a friendly environment that gave me the opportunity to familiarise myself with the Community Bank interviewers. After I had successfully impressed the judging panel and accepted my offer as a Non-Executive Board Member, the team kept in touch and supported my professional development by inviting me to get involved in the Kickstart Graduate Development Program. The support from the DeakinTALENT team means so much to me for not only providing a strong background for applying for this position, but it also enables myself to reach for my best potential and ready to work in anywhere that I want.
